Your Diet: Getting the Basics Right Without the Overwhelm
Nutrition advice online can feel like a full time job to keep up with. Keto one week, carnivore the next, a new superfood every month. If you eat a fairly standard Australian diet and just want to feel better without overhauling your whole life, here's the good news: it's simpler than the internet makes it look.
Start with whole foods
The single biggest shift most people can make is eating more foods closer to their natural state and fewer that come in a packet with a long ingredient list. Vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, legumes, nuts, eggs, fish and unprocessed meat are all whole foods. Packaged snacks, sugary drinks and heavily processed convenience meals are the ones worth cutting back on, not cutting out entirely, just having less often.
The Mediterranean diet, minus the fuss
You've probably heard the Mediterranean diet mentioned as one of the most researched eating patterns around. It's not really a diet in the restrictive sense, more a way of eating built around vegetables, olive oil, legumes, wholegrains, fish and a moderate amount of dairy, with red meat and sweets kept for occasional treats rather than daily habits. You don't need to be Greek or Italian to eat this way, and you don't need special ingredients. It's a pattern, not a rulebook.
The Harvard Healthy Eating Plate
If you want one visual to keep in your head, the Harvard Healthy Eating Plate is a good one. Picture your plate divided into quarters: half filled with vegetables and a little fruit, a quarter with wholegrains like brown rice, oats or quinoa, and a quarter with protein such as fish, chicken, eggs, legumes or tofu. Add a splash of healthy oil like olive oil, and water as your main drink. No calorie counting, no weighing food, just a rough shape to aim for at most meals.
Small shifts, not a complete overhaul
If your current plate looks quite different from this, that's completely normal and nothing to feel bad about. You don't need to change everything at once. Adding an extra vegetable to dinner, swapping white bread for wholegrain, or having fish once a week are all genuinely meaningful starting points. Consistency over time matters far more than doing it perfectly from day one.
