MPsych (Clin), BPsych (Hons), MAPS, MAPS Clinical Psychology College Associate

Karren Robertson is a fully registered psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency and is a member of the Australian Psychological Society. She is currently completing the Clinical Psychology Registrar program to become endorsed as a Clinical Psychologist (aiming for endorsement mid-2021). After completing a Bachelor of Psychology, Honours (with Honours Class 1) at the University of Newcastle, Karren completed a Master of Psychology - Clinical at the University of New England in Armidale (receiving the Vice Chancellor’s Scholar Award). Karren is accredited to provide psychological services under Medicare.

Karren’s clinical training has included: using a trauma-focused treatment framework for children and adolescents with a complex trauma history and who had been placed into out of home care; working in an in-patient unit as part of a multi-disciplinary team treating adults with complex mental health conditions (such as schizophrenia spectrum and personality disorders); and working in both private and primary mental health settings with children, adolescents, and adults experiencing mild to moderate mental health conditions (such as anxiety disorders, mood disorders, sleep issues, grief, and trauma). Her preferred approaches involve evidence-based treatment modalities such as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Schema Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy, as well as the use of mindfulness and motivational interviewing techniques.

Karren is passionate about the need to reduce suicide rates and has completed research in this area culminating in two theses (one aimed at understanding suicide protective factors, and one investigating the implementation of a school-based mental health program for youth). Karren gets immense satisfaction from empowering people to live their lives in rich and meaningful ways consistent with their values through individually tailored treatment plans and is strongly committed to continuing her own professional development in order to help her clients achieve that outcome.

Karren loves being with her family and particularly enjoys looking after her toddler grandson. In her spare time, she also likes to catch up with friends and have a good laugh, “try” to keep fit, take scenic walks, watch a good movie, and caravan around the beautiful Australian landscapes. Her personal long-term goal is to learn Spanish before travelling there in a few years.
