Massage Therapy

Massage is considered the oldest and simplest form of therapy. The word "massage" has its origin in both the Greek and Hebrew languages. It is a combination of the Hebrew word 'me-sakj' which means 'to anoint with oil' and the Greek word 'massein' which means to knead. It is the practice of influencing soft tissue through physical manipulation of the body.

Most people understand that massage creates a pleasant sensation on the skin, but did you realise that effective massage also relieves pain and relaxes and stimulates the body? Massage is not just a luxury for the few, but has therapeutic value for everyone. It is an important partner to medical and allied health professional therapy as it stimulates blood circulation and lymphatic drainage, improves blood supply and waste elimination throughout the body.

Anyone can use their hands and apply pressure to give a form of a massage, but in order to administer a therapeutic massage that achieves beneficial results, a thorough understanding of anatomy and bodily systems is required. All Massage Therapists at ATUNE have achieved national training and education standards and work within their professional scope of

practice. At ATUNE, Massage Therapy is conducted within a coordinated team of Health Professionals to ensure our Therapists offer every client the most beneficial care. It is ATUNE Clinic Policy that every Massage Therapist participates in ongoing education to make available to you the most recent advances in health care.

When attending ATUNE you can expect your Massage Therapist to comply with the standards for ethical practice outlined by the Governing Body for Massage Therapy.

Massage should not be painful however some clients find that in order to achieve their goal for treatment some discomfort may be felt. Informing your practitioner of the pressure and style of massage you enjoy will ensure you are given the therapy that most suits your needs.

Hygiene - All practitioners at ATUNE observe the strictest hygiene standards. Clinic Hygiene Policy is stringent and medically sound so that you can be assured that each Massage Therapist is diligent to wash their hands thoroughly, use clean linen and fresh oil for every client.

Modesty - Our Massage Therapists always respect your modesty at all times. We supply you with garments suitable for massage and leave the room while you undress. No client, regardless of sex, will ever be asked to remove their most personal undergarments

Swedish/Relaxation Massage

Is a form of massage that originated in Sweden in the 18th century. Every stroke and movement is directed toward the heart. This type of massage has two major benefits: it increases circulation of blood and oxygen flow around the body and enhances the flushing of metabolic waste from the body.

Remedial Massage/Therapeutic Massage

Focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue and the associated connective tissues. Connective tissue and fascia cover and support all the internal structures of the body. The aim of this therapy is to remove deep muscular and connective tissue tension caused by poor posture, stress and acute or chronic injury to the body. The slow deep pressure used in this method assists the elimination of many bodily metabolic waste products.

Sports Injury Prevention and Rehabilitation

Injury prevention is tailored to the athlete and their sport. This is using a lot of the remedial techniques but also Swedish techniques to help the recovery of muscles. This treatment is always recommended on the athlete’s rest day giving the body 12-24 hours of recovery from the massage treatment before going back to their training/sport.

Rehabilitation massage can also be used for anyone who is coming back from an injury or surgery. This treatment increases the healing process and helps with the balance of the body to increase your rehabilitation with the physiotherapist/exercise physiologist. This treatment decreases swelling, tension, tightness, other aches and pains that may occur when in recovery, it increases blood circulation, and drainage of the lymphatic system.

Sinus Drainage and Facial Massage

If you suffer with congestion and sinus headaches, recovering from a cold, covid, flu, or hay-fever this treatment is for you. Sinus drainage massage helps drain the lymphatic system in your face, which leads to opening up your airways and help reducing any headaches. Facial massage is also great with those who clench, grind or strain their jaw. Tension in the jaw can be a one of the leading causes for headaches. Ask to add this to any of your massage treatments.
