10 Tips to Nurture Your Health During Cancer Treatment

Are you or a loved one navigating a cancer diagnosis? Whether you're newly diagnosed or about to begin chemotherapy or radiation therapy, it's natural to feel overwhelmed. You may be searching for ways to maintain strength, reduce side effects, and support your body's healing process.

At ATUNE Health Centres, we've helped many individuals through the cancer journey, and we believe in supporting your health holistically alongside medical treatment. The right nutritional and lifestyle choices can help improve energy, support immunity, and ease common side effects like fatigue, nausea, and appetite changes.

Here are 10 practical tips to help optimise your health during cancer treatment:

1. Eat Small, Frequent Meals

Rather than three large meals a day, aim for small meals every 1–2 hours. Take small bites and chew thoroughly—this supports digestion, which can be compromised during treatment.

2. Move Your Body (Even a Little Helps!)

Exercise can significantly improve your response to treatment, reduce fatigue, and boost well-being. Start slow, but try to work up to 70–150 minutes of aerobic activity each week. Walking, swimming, and gentle yoga are great options.

3. Manage Taste Changes

If food tastes “off” or metallic, suck on ice cubes between bites. This can help cleanse your palate and soothe an irritated throat.

4. Stay Hydrated

Aim to drink 2–3 litres of fluid daily. Choose filtered water, herbal teas like green tea, ginger, or peppermint, and fresh vegetable juices. A good rule of thumb: sip around 150ml every hour.

5. Boost Protein Intake

Protein is vital for tissue repair and immune function. Choose high-quality sources such as organic lean meats, fish, eggs, legumes, nuts, and seeds. Aim for 1.2–1.5g of protein per kg of body weight daily. Struggling to eat enough? A protein drink may help.

6. Use Spices

Add anti-inflammatory spices like turmeric, ginger, and galangal to your meals. Other beneficial spices include anise, cinnamon, oregano, garlic, black pepper, and rosemary—all known for their cancer-fighting properties.

7. Choose Easy-to-Digest Meals

Soups, stews, porridges, and watery fruits are gentler on digestion. Traditional bone broth is especially nourishing and supports gut health.

8. Focus on Fibre

Support bowel health by eating plenty of fresh fruit, vegetables, and legumes. These high-fibre foods help regulate digestion and promote prebiotic activity in the gut.

9. Eat Whole, Anti-Inflammatory Foods

Choose whole, seasonal, and organic foods when possible. These are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals. Include plenty of omega-3 fatty acids from sources like wild-caught fish, flaxseeds, walnuts, chia, and sea vegetables to help reduce inflammation.

10. Support Detox and Immunity

Incorporate medicinal mushrooms, fermented foods, cruciferous vegetables, and chlorophyll-rich greens like spirulina, chlorella, and wheatgrass. These promote detoxification, immune support, and help alkalise the body—important since cancer cells tend to thrive in acidic environments.
