Osteopathy
What are the styles of Osteopathic treatment?
In carrying out treatments, Osteopaths will use what is probably the largest range of techniques in any manual therapy. These include:
- Massage and stretching
- Articulation techniques where joints are passively taken through their range of motion.
- Muscle Energy techniques where tight muscles are released by alternating between periods of stretching and contraction of the muscle.
- Counter strain techniques where release of restriction is achieved by placing the affected joint or muscle in a position of comfort thus allowing the body to release the area of tension.
- Functional techniques where joints are gently mobilised to release of tension.
- Manipulation of joints may be used where it is appropriate and safe to do so. Osteopathic manipulations are conducted using minimum levels of force to maximise safety and minimise patient discomfort.
- Specialised gentle release technique known as "Osteopathy in the Cranial field" which is suited to young children and the physically frail.
- "Visceral" techniques are used in the management of conditions affecting internal organs. These involve gentle and rhythmical stretching of the visceral areas.
Osteopathic treatments and techniques are tailored to the requirements of the individual patient.
Treatment results
Osteopaths never fix your condition instead they facilitate your bodies' own healing mechanisms to restore you back to health.
Is Osteopathic treatment safe?
Osteopathy has one of the highest safety records of any medically-related profession. Osteopaths are trained to recognise any condition that might make Osteopathic treatment inadvisable, and will refer patients to the appropriate medical area in such cases. When devising your therapy, our prime consideration is for your safety.
