Why Speech Pathology?

Australian is ageing and as the number of older Australians is increasing so are those experiencing communication and swallowing issues.

  • 95% of aged care residents have at least one communication disorder.
  • 60% people who have suffered a stroke have dysphagia (swallowing issues)
  • 50% people in aged care facility has dysphagia

Speech Pathology Australia 2016

Swallowing and communication disorders have a nutritional, emotional and social impact on the client and their family and carers.

It is vital that concerns regarding swallowing difficulties are addressed. Clients with poor swallowing function are at risk of:

  • Aspiration which may lead to chest infections
  • Malnutrition
  • Dehydration
  • Weight loss

Communication issues may affect a client’s ability to understand language, communicate their thoughts and ideas or speak clearly. This can lead to isolation, social and mental health issues.

How can the Speech Pathologist Help?

Speech Pathologists at ATUNE work with clients of all ages to improve the communication and swallowing abilities, improving health, increasing independence and improving quality of life.

We work very closely all of our integrated team members, particularly with our dietician. Together we can provide you with the most comprehensive, nutritionally balanced and safe diet and mealtime management plan for every client.

Dietetics

Eating a healthy and well-balanced diet is just as important for the elderly, or house bound client as any other age group.

Residents in aged care, or isolated house bound clients can become vulnerable to malnutrition and become more susceptible to illness due to complications such as, diabetes, problems swallowing, depression, or even the physical inability to feed themselves. To ensuring optimum health for each client we advise a professional dietitian to identify these issues and give you the tools and advice to managing them effectively.
