Worry

Many people spend large amounts of time engaging in worry.  Worry is a way of thinking that is unhealthy and leads to stress and upset. Worry begins with a thought. Let’s suppose that the thought is, “Amy has finished school”.  That thought alone is quite harmless, but when worry is added to it we can feel like we are spiralling out of control.  Worry causes a whole train of negative thoughts to cycle through our mind.  A worry cycle might sound something like this - “Now that Amy has left school she needs to get serious about her next step. I wish she would stop relaxing and get focussed on a career.  If she takes too long to move on all the courses will be filled and she will miss out. Then what will she do?

Amazingly, the simple thought “Amy has finished school” can lead to thoughts of Amy missing out on courses and ending up with nothing to do. Worry can take a simple thought to a distressing end which can ruin our day to day enjoyment of life.  Is worry at the centre of your life? The good news is that no-one is a born-worrier, but rather worry is behaviour that is learned. Just as we learn to worry, we can learn to think in more healthy ways that will bring peace to our minds. So “don’t worry” because it doesn’t change anything.
