Buteyko Therapy
Asthma
How can the Buteyko Breathing Method stop Asthma?
Although asthma sufferers may have different triggers that initiate asthma attacks (e.g. dust, perfume, pollution and so on) they all have one thing in common. Studies show that people with asthma consistently breathe on average 2-3 times more air per minute than those without asthma (CHVS). This excessive air intake increases an asthma sufferer's exposure to airborne triggers that lead to an attack. Vulnerability to attack can be significantly reduced through re-training the rate and depth of breathing. Buteyko practitioners can determine if CHVS is a problem for you.
Does science support the Buteyko Breathing Method?
Medical research trials conducted with asthma sufferers produced the following median results when assessed 3 months after completion of a Buteyko course:
- 90% less need for reliever medication
- 49% less need for preventer medication
Results from Mater Hospital Trials, Brisbane Bowler, S.Det.al (1994)
(Many people reported an improved quality of life after the trial.)
